It occurred to me this week that it has been a while since I have touched upon some of the classic Greek literature that is out there. As a child I used to read a lot relating to Greek mythology and was a particular fan of the stories related to Odysseus. Then as I grew and took up acting I enjoyed plays such as the Libation Bearers and played the part of Orestes on a number of occasions.
I must say I do feel that Greek mythology was ahead of its time in terms of characterisation and that many contemporary writers have ‘borrowed’ many elements from the stories that were passed down centuries ago. Characters like Medusa, Orestes, Medea and Ariadne were particular favourites of mine. It would be interesting to know which modern stories will bear the test of time as well as their Greek counterparts.
